Emma Thompson looked poles apart from her signature elegant aura as the teaser trailer for Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical was released on Wednesday.
The accoladed actress, 63, transforms into the infamous Miss Trunchbull in the upcoming family feature, which will make for perfect viewing over the Christmas holidays.
The big screen adaptation of the West End phenomenon sees an unrecognizable side to Emma, who, in the trailer, is pictured wearing the villainous headmistress’ khaki trench coat and the fierce, scraped-back hairdo the character is associated with.

A brand new take on the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical tells the story of an extraordinary girl with a vivid imagination, who dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.
Stepping into the shoes of one of fiction’s most beloved characters is Alisha Weir, while Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough play her parents, whose loud and selfish behavior triggers the quiet observer in Matilda to think up cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge.
Matilda Wormwood finds solace in her inspirational teacher Miss Honey, played by James Bond star Lashana Lynch, who encourages her pupil to conjure her own fantastical tales.

Directed by Tony Award-winning director Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical), the film is produced by Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan for Working Title, Jon Finn (Billy Elliot), and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company.
Screenwriter Dennis Kelly adapts the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production for the big screen, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
After the teaser trailer’s release, one avid fan wanted to reiterate that the upcoming feature was not a remake.

‘No one is realizing that it’s NOT a remake of the original film, but a film based on the MUSICAL of Roald Dahl’s book,’ the insist comment read.
Meanwhile, fans of the musical, which made its West End debut over a decade ago in October 2011, voiced their excitement for the new movie.
‘So excited for this! Love the musical, seen it endless times [sic],’ one wrote, as another chimed: ‘I do like the official teaser trailer for the film version of Matilda The Musical and I am looking forward to seeing it on the big screen at the Cinema in December #MatildaMovie’.
